This world (ARSH 1983) is gone, but we can and should try to give our present world its own unique nostalgic character every day with examples like this in mind.

My Grandmother said frequently in her wisdom, “You can never go home again.” It’s a key truth. People waste and ruin their lives, and some their bodies, trying to go back to their youth, decades ago, in utter futility. We can’t go back. Time is linear. That world is gone. When this piece aired I was 6 years old, having just finished kindergarten one month before. Fond memories, to be sure, but memories.

What we should do is make today into something that we will look back in fond nostalgia of decades from now. We can and certainly should use the past as a pattern and example, but live in the present building every day as something that has its own ever-unfolding nostalgic potential.

So maybe be inspired by this lovely piece, but create the ARSH 2026 version. Don’t just sit in bitter paralysis trying to “go home again”, because that’s exactly what satan wants.

And now if you’ll excuse me, I have some nostalgia to go cook up, because these are “the good old days” of the future, if we choose to make today something memorable, beautiful and good, no matter the circumstances.
